Collaboration with USA in energy research to be strengthened

On 27 June, Mats Persson, Sweden’s Minister for Education, and Asmeret Asefaw Berhe, Director of the US Department of Energy signed an agreement on research collaboration in the energy area. The Swedish Research Council is responsible for collaborations and initiatives under the agreement.

The purpose of the agreement is to establish a framework to promote scientific and technical collaboration between Sweden and USA in the energy area and other closely related areas. This will facilitate researcher exchanges, loans of and access to materials and facilities, information exchange and joint seminars and projects.

Initially, the activities will focus on basic research in advanced scientific computing research, basic energy sciences and nuclear physics, and on research infrastructures, such as MAX IV and ESS in Sweden and US laboratories and research infrastructures for energy research. The research fields of biology and environmental research, fusion energy, and high-energy physics are also included in the agreement.

The Swedish Research Council has played an active role in the design of the agreement, and was involved when the idea was spawned in 2019. The Swedish Research Council will also be responsible for collaborations and initiatives within the framework for the agreement.

“We are very happy that this agreement is now in place. The areas covered by the agreement are incredibly important for enabling us to address the major challenges of today and tomorrow, and strong international research collaboration is important. We look forward to our collaboration and the opportunities it will provide for Swedish research,” says Katarina Bjelke, Director General of the Swedish Research Council.
