Research infrastructures

The Swedish Research Council works to enable Swedish researchers to gain access to infrastructure for research of the highest quality. Research infrastructure means for example research facilities, facilities for register research, comprehensive data networks and resources for calculation which are used nationally or internationally by several research groups.

The Council´s Guide to the Infrastructure

The Research Council´s Council for Research Infrastructure [RI] has developed a long-term plan with experts for research infrastructure: the Research Council´s Guide to Infrastructure. The Guide is to be used as a basis for strategic discussions and before taking decisions about funding or the development of infrastructures.

Support for Swedish research infrastructure

Through the Research Council, Sweden supports infrastructure in the form of e.g. large databases, micro manufacturing laboratories, the university data network SUNET, Swedish National Infrastructure for Computing (SNIC) and the Database InfraStructure Committee (DISC).

The Research Council also contributes to the running of two national research institutions: MAX-lab and the Onsala Space Observatory.

International collaboration

The Council for Research Infrastructure handles Swedish participation in several international organisations and institutions for research infrastructure. Sweden is a member for example of the particle physics laboratory CERN, the molecular biological organisations EMBL and EMBC, the European University Institute EUI, the European South Observatory ESO, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility ESRF and the Integrated Ocean Deep Sea Drilling Programme IODP.

The Committee also represents Sweden in the collaborative organisation ESFRI, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures, where participants from around 30 European countries work to strengthen Europe as a research arena by amongst other things developing a common guide to European research infrastructure.

Future infrastructure projects

The Council for Research Infrastructures participates in discussions and negotiations concerning amongst other things the following facilities.
facilities for register research
  • the XFEL free electron laser in Germany
  • the FAIR accelerator complex for nuclear and hadron physics in Germany
  • the next generation European Spallation Source, ESS, and its possible siting in Sweden
  • the next generation MAX IV synchrotron source in Lund
  • the ITER fusion reactor.
