Strategy and analysis

Part of the the Swedish Research Council´s activity is concerned with analyses, monitoring and strategic matters relating to research and research funding from a national and international perspective.

As the only research funding agency, the Research Council acts as an adviser to the government on research-political matters. The authority also has overarching responsibly for matters concerning ethical requirements in research.

Analysis and monitoring

The Council carries out analyses of problem areas relating to the funding of basic research, interdisciplinary research and gender equality in the allocation of research support.

The Research Council monitors the general research-political development and works continually on the development of statistics and method within the field, e.g. through bibliometrical studies and collaboration with Statistics Sweden [SCB].

Evaluation

The Research Council continually carries out evaluations of different research areas. These evaluations are often performed by international research groups.

International collaboration

The Council works to stimulate Swedish participation in European and international research collaboration and exchanges of experience. So as to strengthen national finance for research we also strive to improve exploitation of European and international research funds.

The Research Council functions as the Swedish representative with thirty or so research organisations and collaborative projects.

Ethics

The Research Council has overarching responsibility for seeing that ethical matters are taken into account in research, and provides information on questions concerning ethics in research. The Council works to create greater awareness of ethical matters and their importance in the research community. The main responsibility for advancing this work is borne by the Research Council´s Expert Panel for Ethics.

Gender equality

The Research Council works actively to promote equality between men and women. One of the goals is to achieve the same average level of grants awarded to men and women when allocating research funds. Another goal is the promotion of equality in the research community. The Council also strives to achieve an even balance between the sexes within its own evaluation organisation which scrutinises and prioritises research applications.

Gender research and gender perspective

The Research Council seeks the acceptance of a gender perspective in research and supports gender research. A large part of the work is carried out by the Committee for Gender Research.  The aim is to enhance the academic status of gender research and its acceptance both as an academic discipline and as an important perspective within the realms of other disciplines.
