Science in Society

The Seventh EU Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7), includes a specific research programme entitled Science in Society.

The purpose of this initiative is to bridge the gap between professional researchers and people who lack a formal scientific education, and to foster public interest in science. Some of the initiatives are therefore aimed at arousing interest in science among young people and strengthening scientific education at all levels.

Science in Society (SiS) has been awarded €280 million for various activities between the years 2007 and 2013.

The Swedish Research Council serves as the FP7 National Contact Point (NCP) for Science Communication in the Science in Society programme area, and a reference group has been formed to respond to various viewpoints concerning the nature of the programme.

The Research Council acts also as expert in the programme committee and has for that purpose  an advisory group with representatives for different stakeholders, e.g NGOs, universities, other funding organisations, etc. The Swedish Agency for Innovation Systems (VINNOVA) has the major responsibility for disseminating information on the SiS-programme and advising target groups in Sweden.
