The grant is similar to the current postdoctoral fellowship, as it deals with supporting international researcher mobility. One of the differences is that the new grant is not a scholarship, but is rather based on the researcher being employed at a Swedish higher education institution during the entire grant period, even when the researcher is abroad. This means that the researcher has complete social protection in the form of parental allowance, sickness allowance, and pension over the entire grant period.
"Opportunities for making international connections are critical for a researcher´s career, which is one of the reasons for our efforts in the new International Postdoc funding scheme. Moreover, for our researchers this will mean greater economic security than our current postdoctoral fellowship offers, since a researcher travelling abroad has employment in Sweden as the foundation," says Mille Milnert, Director General of the Swedish Research Council.
In September, the board of the Swedish Research Council will decide on the general conditions for the International Postdoc — for example, how long after receiving a doctorate people will be able to apply, and how much of the grant period must be located abroad.
The new International Postdoc Grant replaces the current form of grants: Grant for Postdoctoral Position in Sweden and Postdoctoral Fellowship with Homecoming Grant.
The changes we´re making in our calls for proposals have their foundation in this work, and we will gradually change and improve our funding system. Other parts of this work will result, for example, in a new IT system for our applicants.
