Evaluation in Educational sciences

Scientific quality is the fundamental criterion the Swedish Research Council uses when awarding grants. The Swedish Research Council also promotes gender equality and mobility in research.

Evaluation organisation

The Scientific Council for the Educational Sciences distributes funds to basic research of the highest quality in these fields of science. All applications are assessed by evaluation panels, specialised in their subjects and composed of Swedish and Nordic researchers, who scientifically evaluate and prioritise the applications, and submit a proposed decision to the Scientific Council.

We ask that you, as an applicant, suggest which evaluation panel you wish to assess your application. You do this by specifying on the application form, in order of priority, the evaluation panel that best fits the focus of your proposed project. Ask yourself the following question when choosing a panel: in which area does this project contribute to scientific progress? You can choose up to three panels. Ultimately, it is the Swedish Research Council that determines which panel will review your application.

Assessment criteria

The assessment of the scientific quality of an application is made using four quality components, known as basic criteria. Several components are used in order to arrive at a comprehensive assessment. However, this does not necessarily mean that these components are weighted the same for all applications.

The quality components are:

On a seven-grade scale:

  • Novelty and originality
  • Scientific quality of the proposed research
  • Merits of the applicant(s)

On a three-grade scale:

  • Feasibility

Additional criteria may also be relevant for certain applications.

The various component criteria being used in the assessment should be weighed together to a global grade (1—7), which reflects the overall assessment of the scientific quality of the application by the evaluation panel.

The Scientific Council for Educational Sciences decides which applications will be funded

Each application is assessed by one of the four evaluation panels of Scientific Council for Educational Sciences. The Council then decides which applications will be funded.
