Travel Grant

1. Type of grant

The main purpose of the programme is to enable for an invited conference lecturer to apply for travel and lodging. Funds for travel and lodging can also be applied for stay abroad or for inviting a guest scientist to a Swedish institution.

Conditions

  • Applications may be submitted continuously during the year.
  • The application must be written in Swedish or English.
  • Applications are not dealt with between 15 May and 15 August.
  • Doctoral students can obtain grants only in exceptional cases. This does not apply to travel relating to observations or experiments at facilities with which the Swedish Research Council has special agreements, i.e. EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory, facilities in Grenoble and Hamburg), IODP (the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program) and NOT (the Nordic Optical Telescope), La Palma.
  • Recipients of project research grants that include funds from the Swedish Research Council can obtain travel grants only in exceptional cases. This restriction does not apply to travel to the aforesaid facilities. When holders of current project research grants apply for grants from the travel programme, the reason why additional travel funds are being applied for must be explained clearly. In every case, the journey concerned must be essential from a scientific point of view.
  • Grants are not provided for accompanying family members.
  • An application for a travel grant must be received not later than two months before the date of departure.
  • Applications for grants below 6 000 SEK will not be considered.

The following types of travel grant may be applied for:

  • Grants for researchers' attendance at congresses, conferences or symposia, provided that the researcher concerned has received a personal invitation (initiated by the arrangers) to hold a lecturer, and if the meeting is deemed to be of obvious interest to Swedish Natural and/or Engineering Sciences. Poster presentations are not approved.
  • Grants may be approved if the applicants are appointed to represent Sweden in contexts deemed to be highly important to Swedish Natural and/or Engineering Sciences (international organisations or the like). Normally, work in organisations' committees does not justify a grant from the travel programme
  • Grants for journeys abroad (not exceeding two months) may be awarded: a)  to researchers who have obtained the opportunity to use international facilities,      a laboratory abroad or corresponding installations b)  for international research collaboration c)  for travel involving specimen collection for biodiversity research.
  • Grants may be approved for visiting scientists' brief stays (not exceeding one month) at Swedish institutions.
