Globalization of Society

The Swedish Research Council invites researchers from all academic disciplines to apply for funds for collaborative research addressing Globalization of Society.

Funds totalling 15 million Swedish kronor (SEK) will be available in 2011. The duration of the projects may be up to 3 years.

Globalization affects the development of society at all levels. It leads to an ever-increasing interdependence of states and continents, affecting everything from politics, the economy, and cultural and social life, to technology, climatology, and aetiology.

The Swedish Research Council therefore welcomes research projects that approach globalisation from different perspectives, with the intent to study various types of interrelationships. One requirement is that the research must address changes — causes and consequences — that may be defined as societal in a broad sense. The Swedish Research Council particularly encourages collaboration among researchers from different academic disciplines.

The criteria for allocating funds are high scientific quality and high relevance to the advancement of knowledge about the globalization of society.

Grant applications addressing research on Globalization of Society must include Appendix a7, describing the project´s relevance to the field. Only those applications that include Appendix a7 will be considered for funding under this initiative. The Swedish Research Council´s regular evaluation panels will initially review the applications. An interdisciplinary panel will then assess selected applications from the standpoints of quality and relevance. The Board has empowered the Scientific Council for Humanities and Social Sciences to make the funding decisions.

Applications not granted funding under this special initiative, Globalization of Society, compete in the usual manner for Project Research Grants from the Swedish Research Council´s research appropriation.

Appendix a7 — Globalization of Society

This appendix comprises the basis for evaluating a project´s relevance to Globalization of Society, and therefore the content is of decisive importance. Only the applications that include this appendix will be considered for funding. Appendix a7 (maximum 1 page) must include the following information:

  • The project´s specific relationship to the research area, Globalization of Society.
  • The project´s international perspective and scope, and the nature of international collaboration in the project.
  • The contribution that the project is expected to make to scientific advancement in the area.
