The Swedish Research Council supports basic research of the highest quality within all research areas, annually approximately 4 billion Swedish kronor (SEK). Under the headings to the left you will find examples of research that we support. The most extensive part of our research support, about half of all funding is allocated to research projects initiated by the researchers themselves. We also finance infrastructures, positions, scholarships, research environments, and various types of national and international collaboration.
All research disciplines are supported
Research in the natural and engineering sciences received the greatest share of funding, followed by research tools and infrastructure, medicine and health, humanities and social sciences, educational sciences and artistic research and development.Strategic research areas
Totally 43 research environments within 20 strategic research areas are financed during the period 2010-2014. This investment in strategic areas means an increase in research grants for seats of learning, which will rise to SEK 1,315 million annually from 2012. The Swedish Research Council is responsible of 10 of these research areas. Investment for research infrastructure
Investment of SEK 748 million for infrastructure has been recommended during a five-year period within the framework of strategic investment, which means SEK 184 annually from 2012. Investment in infrastructure is necessary for the development of Swedish research. Another example is the investment on the MAX-laboratory in Lund, a national research facility which we are a part in. At the MAX-laboratory researchers are developing accelerator concepts and radiation tubes, and it is here that the new concept was developed for the proposed synchrotron light facility MAX IV.
Support to strong research environments and research schools
For instance, the Council allocates the 10-year Linnaeus grants to around 40 particularly prominent research environments, totally about SEK 280 million (together with Formas). Also, we finance Berzeli centers together with VINNOVA with up to SEK 100 million during a ten-year period. The Berzeli centers are an investment in strong research environments orientated towards excellent basic research.
