Centers of Gender Excellence

In order to promote the internationalization of Swedish gender research, the Swedish Research Council has made funding available to strong environments in gender research. In November 2006 three of the research environments were selected to receive support. Innovative thinking and concrete plans for how to become an international leader in the field were the most important criteria for selection by the international panel of experts.

Center of Gender Excellence, Uppsala University

The aim of the Center of Gender Excellence (CGEx, 2007—2011) at the Uppsala University Center for Gender Research is to create lasting interdisciplinary encounters and networks focusing on gender and research. The aim of the research program (GenNa) is to pursue empirical studies and theoretical reflections on how knowledge about gender and “gendered" knowledge is created in the interface between natural and cultural sciences.

The Center is busy identifying new research areas, undertaking collaborations with internationally recognized researchers, and organizing cross-disciplinary seminars and conferences. By bridging organizational and theoretical boundaries, the Center offers a unique forum for researchers and students from differing disciplinary backgrounds.

Center of Gender Excellence, Umeå University

The Center of Gender Excellence, (CGEx, 2007—2011) at Umeå University is part of the interdisciplinary organization Umeå Advanced Gender Studies (UAGS). UAGS hosts the National Graduate School for Gender Research (a key resource for renewal and succession in the field), Forum for Women´s Studies, The Center for Gender Research at the Faculty of Medicine, the JUSTE Group (education), Umeå Gender Studies in Law, Gender Studies in the Arts, and Forum for Gender Research at Mid Sweden University.

The aim of the research program within CGEx, "Challenging Gender," is to use existing empirical and theoretical gender research to establish a good environment for European and global collaboration in the five themes of the program: democracy/social justice, emotions, violence, health, and normalization. These themes create an interdisciplinary arena for reflection and developing theory. Umeå University contributes important resources to an international reference group and a program for internationalization.

Center of Gender Excellence, Linköping University and Örebro University

The Center of Gender Excellence (CGEx, 2007—2011) at Linköping University and Örebro University is part of the Institute for Thematic Gender Research, which is a collaboration between the two universities. Under the overarching theme of Gendering Excellence (GEXcel), the CGEx will undertake new research on shifting gender relations, intersectionality, and embodiment. One of the goals is to create a platform for a more permanent Swedish-based European Collegium for Advanced Transnational and Transdisciplinary Gender Research.
An important part of the CGEx is its program of guest lecturers, which hosts acclaimed researchers and promising young researchers from Sweden and the rest of the world from a number of different disciplines. Together with local associates, guest researchers are placed in research teams to pursue thematically defined gender research. The twelve themes to be addressed during the CGEx period will be directed by the six local professors of gender research who run the program. The first theme is Gender, Sexuality, and "Global Change," set to run from September 2007 to September 2008.
