Integration or segregation? Immigrants and the labor market

Immigration and the situation for immigrants is at the center of public debate in Sweden.  This programs treats several core issues in this debate. The program is a collaborative effort involving economists and sociologists working at the respective departments and at the Institute for Social Research at Stockholm University. Several parts of the program deal with the integration of immigrants in society.

Can immigrants enter the labor market by starting their own companies or by working for temporary staffing companies? With a unique data bank the researchers at this center can elucidate this question.  Another issue is discrimination against immigrants.  One project in the program involves sending job applications from fictitious persons with Swedish and foreign names.

Another project treats the issue of the importance of networking to immigrants and to individuals born in Sweden. In recent years the question of housing segregation has occupied the center of public debate.

One project deals with how it can be studied empirically with the aid of a new data bank whether segregation has any effects in various respects.  One key issue is how the second generation of immigrants are faring now that they have largely reached the age where their establishment on the labor market can be studied.

Various projects focus on the effects of immigration on unemployment, wages, and the economy of the public sector.  A follow-up of immigration from the new EU countries will be carried out.  Data not only from Sweden but also from Denmark and Germany will be used in the studies.

Climate evolution, variability and sensitivity

The overarching aim of this research programme comprising 26 scientists at four departments, is to further develop climate research at Stockholm University, into a coherent cutting-edge environment consistently operating at the forefront of science.

The research will be organized in five cross-disciplinary core themes, each of which brings together scientists from different departments, working on different scales and with complementary methods:
1. Climate variability
2. Atmospheric and oceanic circulation
3. Boundary conditions for circulation system modelling
4. Small-scale processes with large-scale impact
5. Biogeochemical cycles.

The issues we address are of critical importance for an improved assessment of natural climate variability, anthropogenically-induced climate change and simulating future climate. To meet the core theme objectives we will conduct climate modelling experiments firmly rooted in a comprehensive understanding of the underlying processes, natural climatic evolution, and magnitudes of short-term climate variability.

The researchers will add critical expertise in key fields of modeling and focus on improved integration and exchange of data and ideas among research groups, improved formulation of scale transformation and upscaling strategies, and identification of critical information gaps that will be filled through field campaigns.
