Learning, Interaction, and Mediated communication in contemporary Society (LInCs)

The aim of this project is to conduct theoretically motivated empirical research on learning inside and outside educational settings. This includes a general interest in advancing our understanding of what constitutes productive modes of organizing learning as well as specific research activities within fields that concern the social distribution of opportunities for learning for different groups in an increasingly heterogeneous society.

In a complex society, learning is a key element in the development of individuals and organizations. This dependence on knowledge is critical not just for coping with new technologies and new forms of production, but also for the development of competent citizens who are equipped with knowledge and skills to participate in, and assume responsibility for, all the activities that characterize a democratic society.

Issues to be addressed in empirical research concern the role of modern technologies for the transformation of teaching, learning and literacy practices, comparative studies (historical and contemporary) of the organization of classroom activities, learning in the work-place and systems of life-long learning, marginalization and learning disabilities, ethnic/social background and learning, and the role of gender in the shaping of school practices.

An important area for research is a critical analysis of the international comparisons of educational achievement and systems of monitoring performance in education.
