Epidemiology encompasses studies of the causes and scope of diseases in the population. Lund University and Uppsala University are joining in a new epidemiology research programme, i.e. EpiHealth. Large population studies, with over 30 years of collected data, will be used together with biobanks containing blood samples and genetic material. Taking this approach, the EpiHealth project will acquire greater knowledge about the development of major public health diseases and will monitor trends in health and disease.
In this project, researchers at Karolinska Institutet will improve the opportunities for epidemiological research. They plan to do this by, e.g. bringing together biobanks, findings from major population studies, computerised patient data systems, and prescription registers. The researchers will survey the causes and risk factors underlying various diseases. They will study what can be done to prevent disease and will also assess different treatment methods retrospectively.
