An overview of research on teaching and learning mathematics

In order to further discussion about the field of educational science and its continued development, the Committee for Educational Science at the Swedish Research Council has asked some researchers to illuminate different themes connected with the Committee’s assignment. Professor Rudolf Strässer, Luleå University of Technolog, in this report discusses Swedish research on didactics of mathematics and how it relates to international research. The report also summarises Swedish doctoral and licentiate dissertations in the field, and gives an overview of Swedish institutions with activities in mathematics and pedagogy/education.

The Swedish Research Council bears national responsibility for developing the country’s basic research towards attainment of a strong international position.
