International evaluation of the Swedish Polar Research organisation

This publication contains two reports, each suggesting an alternative organisation of Swedish polar research. Both reports identify the present organisation as fragmented and unclear with respect to responsibilities for long term planning and international cooperation. In the report named “Svensk Polarforskning – ett utredningsuppdrag”, Professor Anders Karlqvist suggests separating logistics for expeditions from station management, so that the Swedish stations in the Arctic and on Antarctica are run under one entity.

In the other report, which is partly based on professor Karlqvists report, an international expert panel chaired by Professor Karl Fredrik Berggren suggest that polar research logistics and antarctic station management is placed at a host university under supervision of the Swedish Research Council.
