Swedish Needs in Neutron Science 2025
Sweden, together with Denmark, is the host country for the European Spallation Source (ESS), which will be the world's most powerful neutron source for the foreseeable future. The Swedish Research Council is making significant investments in both the construction and operation of the facility.
This report highlights the research needs and resource utilisation in the field of neutron scattering from the perspective of Swedish users and discusses how Sweden can maximise the scientific benefits of ESS. It also addresses how to ensure continued access to complementary facilities such as ILL (Grenoble, France) and ISIS (Oxfordshire, England). The report highlights how the development of instrumentation, methodology, expertise and national coordination can strengthen the Swedish ecosystem for neutron-based research.
The report was written by the board of the Swedish Neutron Scattering Society (SNSS) on behalf of the Swedish Research Council’s Council for Research infrastructure (RFI). It is one of several documents forming the basis for the Swedish Research Council's ongoing strategic work to develop infrastructures for Swedish neutron science and maximise the research benefits of investments in facilities such as ESS and other relevant neutron sources.
