International postdoc within development research

The purpose of the grant is to give newly qualified researchers with a doctoral degree from a Swedish higher education institution (HEI) the opportunity to expand their networks and their competences by working abroad under secure employment conditions. The grant is also intended to promote the quality and renewal of Swedish research. International postdoc grants in development research are funded by the Government’s development aid funds, and the research shall be of particular relevance to the fight against poverty and for sustainable development in low income countries.

Applicant: Individual researcherIndividual researcher who completed a doctoral degree no more than 2 years ago or who will have completed a doctoral degree before the start of the grant period, that is no later than 31 December 2022.

Participating researchers: No other researchers may be invited to join the application.

Grant period: 18–36 months

Grant amount:
1 150 000 SEK per year
A further 50 000 SEK per year may be applied for, for one or more accompanying family members.

Start of grant period: January 2023

Application period: 23 February 2022 (14.00/2 pm) – 29 March 2022 (14.00/2 pm)

Publication of grant award: No later than December 2022

Please note:

  • Persons who have not yet been awarded their doctoral degree can apply for the grant. However, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree before you sign the grant terms and conditions, and before the grant period begins, that is, no later than 31 December 2022. Please note that if you will be completing your doctoral degree after the call has closed, you must provide information about the planned examination in the Research education you upload to the application.
  • As from 2022, new criteria apply for approval of administrating organisations for grants awarded by the Swedish Research Council. You therefore need to make sure that your organisation fulfils the requirements and has been approved by us as an administrating organisation for calls issued after 1 January 2022.
  • Please note also that the instructions for your description of ethical considerations in the application have changed as from this year. Furthermore, we also ask you to describe the management of risks or obstacles to the implementation of the research plan.
  • You will need to have a data management plan Opens in new window. for data generated within the research we award funds for. You must not send the plan to us, but according to our general grant terms and conditions, your administrating organisation must confirm that a data management plan will be in place when you start your project or equivalent, and also that the plan will be maintained.
  • As from 2022, there are guidelines for study registration and result reporting for the clinical studies funded by the Swedish Research Council. This means that information about the study shall be registered in a public study register, and that a summary of the results shall be published in the register.   • Please note also that if you are awarded a grant, you are expected to publish your research data and research results of relevance to the COVID-19 pandemic with open access as soon as possible. Determining which data can be published with open access shall always be based on applicable legislation.
