Needs inventory of research infrastructure of national interest 2025/2026

The Council for Research Infrastructures, RFI, has decided how the 80 proposals submitted in last year’s needs inventory shall be categorised. 37 of the areas have been placed in Category A1, which means that they are highly prioritised and may be included in next year’s call for grants to research infrastructure of national interest.

The needs inventory received 80 proposals from researchers, higher education institutions, and public authorities with research mandates. They relate to both proposals for new or upgraded infrastructure, and descriptions of infrastructures that already receive grants from the Swedish Research Council. Some of the proposals relate to the same or similar needs, and have therefore been assessed together and grouped into one area receiving the same grading and statement. During autumn, RFI will make decisions on the areas from the needs inventory that will be included in the next call for grants to research infrastructure of national interest.

Category A1 means that the area is assessed as having potential to become an infrastructure of national interest and is ready for a call. The same applies for A2, with the difference that RFI does not prioritise the area at present, for strategic or financial reasons. Areas categorised as A3 are also seen as potential infrastructures of national interest, but in these cases the areas are assessed as not sufficiently developed to be included in the call at present.

A description of the different grading categories can be found at the end of the result list. The fact that an area has been categorised as A1 is normally a prerequisite, but not a guarantee, for being included in the next call.

All who have submitted proposals for the needs inventory will shortly have access to statements via Prisma.
