Now possible to use part of your grant for research into COVID-19
If you have a grant from the Swedish Research Council, you can now use part of your funding for research related to Sars-CoV-2 and COVID-19 for a limited period.
The spread of the coronavirus has shown that we quickly need more knowledge in this area. The Swedish Research Council has therefore decided to offer grant holders a time-limited option to use research funding for research relating to Sars-CoV-2 and COVID-19, whatever project idea the funds were awarded for to begin with.
This means that if you have been awarded funding for research*, you now have the option to divert some of your research funding to such research for a limited period.
“In the situation we now find ourselves, this is the easiest and most efficient way of enabling a rapid and time-limited research initiative relating to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers avoid having to spend time on writing new applications and reviewing other researchers’ applications. Instead, we use the peer review by researchers conducted earlier,” says Sven Stafström, Director General of the Swedish Research Council.
The information about focus on temporary initiatives stated in the terms and conditions will also provide us with a picture of the research needs, Sven Stafström thinks.
“In a longer perspective, we will be issuing targeted calls within the area. We are currently working on producing documentation for designing these initiatives.”
* (does not apply to grants to research infrastructure)
The following applies if you wish to use part of your grant for research into Sars-CoV-2 and COVID-19:
- The research shall be conducted as from 1 April to 31 July 2020 at the latest.
- The funds you reallocate for this purpose must not exceed one third of your awarded annual amount.
- You must inform us if you want to use this option, what your research focus would be, and also that this change has been agreed with your administrating organisation (you can email this information to us at utlysningar@vr.se).
- The way in which your funding has been used must later be reported back in a suitable way in your financial and scientific reporting to the Swedish Research Council.
- The option does not include an extension to the original grant period or any right to an increased grant amount. In addition to what is stated above, the general and specific terms and conditions for the original grant continue to apply.
Publishing research data with open access
The Swedish Research Council encourages national and international research collaboration, as well as collegial openness in relation to data and results in the research you are conducting.
You must publish research data on COVID-19 openly, and make the data available as soon as possible. This must be done according to the FAIR principles and in compliance with applicable legislation. For research data including personal data, we encourage meta data to be made available.
