Camilla Bardel is the new secretary general for educational sciences
She is a professor of modern languages, focusing on didactics, with a great interest in languages and language learning, as well as language didactics. In her new role, she wants to work towards more collaboration and internationalisation in educational sciences.
The new secretary general for educational sciences is Camilla Bardel, who has held the post of Professor of Modern Languages with Didactic Focus at Stockholm University since 2010. Her research field relates to multilinguality and language learning.
Over the last ten years, Camilla Bardel has held various types of management positions, one of which as Vice Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at Stockholm University. Since 2019, she has also been a member of the Swedish Research Council’s Committee for Educational Sciences.

“I have mainly worked on issues relating to research, researcher education, collaboration, and funding allocation. I also have long experience as a research leader, among them for two graduate schools funded by the Swedish Research Council; one for teachers and one for teacher educators. These are experiences that I think will be of benefit in my new role as secretary general,” says Camilla Bardel.
With her experience of collaborating on several major research projects with colleagues from different higher education institutions, she has acquired a large network within educational sciences research.
As secretary general for educational sciences, Camilla Bardel wants to contribute to strengthening and developing educational sciences research, not least through collaboration with society at large, but also through internationalisation.
“I see a need to map ongoing research, to identify strategic research areas, and to support the development of strong research environments for educational sciences at Swedish higher education institutions.” This also includes working to improve the opportunities for newly qualified PhDs to continue doing research.
Digitisation and its consequences, and also the role of education in societal segregation and inclusion respectively, are other issues that Camilla Bardel wants to focus on.
Camilla Bardel will take up the position as the new secretary general for educational sciences on 1 September 2021.
The Swedish Research Council has five secretaries general, each with a high level of scientific competence, who contribute knowledge and experience to the organisation
The secretaries general are part of the Swedish Research Council’s executive management team, and initiate, drive and follow up issues within their respective areas of expertise. The secretaries general are active researchers, and usually employed by the Swedish Research Council on a part-time basis for a maximum of six years.
