New statistics for applications and decisions

Every year, the Swedish Research Council produces statistics for applications and decisions. In 2023, we handled a total of 5 684 applications. Of these, 1 052 were awarded a total of just over 5 billion SEK. In the presentation of the 2023 statistics, we have made some changes compared with previous years. One of these is that we are now using Statistics Sweden’s standard for Swedish division of research subjects when we report success rates and grant amounts. The statistics are presented by research subject areas and correspond to the first Statistics Sweden code the applicant has chosen for their application

“We have developed our presentation of the statistics to better answer the questions we receive about our application and decision data. The previous division of application into subject areas did not strictly follow the Statistics Sweden standard, which made it difficult to compare our data with data from other funding bodies, for example,” says Mikael Gröning, head of the Monitoring Unit at the Swedish Research Council.

Excel file shows data for nine years

The Swedish Research Council is also making data available for those who wish to know about previous years. A comprehensive Excel file presents data for most of the applications we have reviewed and decided on during the last nine years. It covers approximately 51 000 applications that can be combined with 19 different parameters.

“There are some new features in the presentation of these data too. We have added a tab with various clickable diagrams and tables that provide a good overview of the outcome of the Swedish Research Council’s reviews, from different perspectives. For example, it is possible to filter the outcome according to subject area, administrating organisation, and the applicant’s gender,” says Mikael Gröning.
