As from January 2025, the Swedish Research Council has a new scientific adviser in artistic research. Her name is Kristina Hagström- Ståhl, and her doctoral degree was in performance studies at the University of California, Berkeley. She also studied music and literature, and has worked as a researcher and teacher at several universities in both Sweden and USA.

During 2010–2015, Kristina Hagström-Ståhl was a member of the Swedish Research Council’s Committee for Artistic Research. She also participated in the build-up of the research environment at the Stockholm University of the Arts and the platform PARSE (Platform for Artistic Research Sweden) at the University of Gothenburg.

“At the moment I am teaching theatre studies at Stockholm University and am a guest lecturer in literary forms of expression at the University of Gothenburg,” Kristina Hagström-Ståhl tells us.

In parallel with her work in the university sector, she works as a director, dramaturg, and translator. For example, last year she produced a new translation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and then directed the staging of it at Gothenburg City Theatre.

“I hope that my broad experience in artistic research will be useful, both for the Swedish Research Council and for the field of artistic research. Because my doctoral degree was in cross-disciplinary, partly practice-based humanities and I am also active in the artistic field, I feel at home in many contexts. I also have international experience and have lived in several countries. I already feel that the Swedish Research Council’s multi-faceted environment fits me like a glove.

What do you want to achieve as scientific adviser?

“It is my hope to be able to contribute to strengthening the role of artistic research in the research community as a whole, and at the same time increase its relevance in the public sphere and in artistic discourse. I want to promote the internationalisation of artistic research, and its visibility to the outside world. And I also want to continue building on the work initiated by my predecessor Maria Hellström Reimer on the relationship of artistic research to other research fields.”

Kristina Hagström-Ståhl succeeds Maria Hellström Reimer as scientific adviser. In her role, she is working alongside Henrik Oscarsson Ekengren, the Swedish Research Council’s Secretary General for Humaities, Social Sciences, and Artistic Research.
