New grant for recruiting researchers active outside Europe
In mid-April, the Swedish Research Council will issue a call for grants of 2 million SEK to enable Swedish higher education institutions and other research organisations to recruit prominent researchers who are active outside Europe.
The new support for recruiting international visiting researchers to Sweden is intended to cover the expenses relating to the recruitment and the researcher’s salary during the initial period.
Conditions for applying for and receiving the grant
Those that can apply for the grant are Swedish higher education institutions (HEIs) or other research organisations that wish to recruit, or have recently recruited, a researcher who was established outside Europe for at least two years. The researcher will be employed by the HEI, and shall have the ambition to establish their research in Sweden.
The grant period is 12 months, and the grant amount is 2 million SEK. The grant may be used to fund costs relating to the researcher’s relocation to Sweden, such as removal costs, rent of housing, travel, and some research expenses caused by the removal. Costs for accompanying family members may also be included. The grant may be used for the researcher’s salary during their stay.
Rolling assessments until 1 December
“With this call, we want to make it easier for higher education institutions and other research organisations in Sweden to recruit prominent research talents who are working outside Europe. We hope that the researchers will establish themselves here and remain after the initial grant period,” says Katarina Bjelke, Director General of the Swedish Research Council.
The call will open 15 April, and it will be possible to submit applications for rolling assessment up until 1 December 2025.
More information will be available in the call text, but it will be necessary to contact the Swedish Research Council first, to access to the application in Prisma. The contact person for this and other questions about the application process is Teresa Ottinger, teresa.ottinger@vr.se
