ERA, the European Research Area, has a new agenda

The Council of Europe has adopted a new political agenda for the European Research Area (ERA) for the years 2025–2027. The agenda sets out the most important measures required to create a single market for research and innovation, to promote free movement of researchers, scientific findings, and innovation, and a more competitive European business sector.

On 23 May, the EU’s research ministers adopted a new political agenda for the European Research Area (ERA). Representatives from the EU’s member states, associated countries, and European stakeholders, together with the European Commission are behind the selection of actions on the agenda.

The new agenda lists eleven long-term structural policy actions, as well as eight three-year actions to develop and implement the European Research Area. Some of the actions are continuations of initiatives included in the previous political agenda, which ran until 2024.

The initiatives in the new agenda will be implemented by the member states on a voluntary basis. They include measures to:

  • promote fairness within open science
  • promote the use of AI in research and innovation
  • increase research security
  • increase society’s trust in science.

The Swedish Research Council represents Sweden in the ERA Forums, the European Commission’s expert group. We are now preparing to support the implementation of ERA through work in areas such as open science, research infrastructures, the assessment of research, and research-based policies. But we are also working to increase trust in science, science security, and responsible AI.
