Researchers from Sweden participate in 34 projects receiving funding from COST, the EU’s network programme

Every year, the EU’s network programme COST is funding new network projects. The projects – known as ‘COST Actions’ – run for four years, and each project receives up to 125 000 EUR during the first year, and 150 000 EUR per year for the next three years. The funding from COST is intended for coordination of the projects and costs for network activities, such as meetings, communication activities, and short visits by junior researchers to other research teams within the project.

A requirement for receiving funding is that at least seven countries participate in the network. In the 70 network projects that are receiving funding this year, researchers from 73 different countries in total are participating. Many of them are multidisciplinary. Natural sciences are represented in 51 per cent of the projects, while medicine is represented in 37 per cent of them. Corresponding figures for other areas: engineering sciences 31 per cent, social sciences 27 per cent, humanities 14 per cent, andagricultural sciences 11 per cent.

Researchers from Sweden participate in 34 of the projects awarded funding. One of the projects has a coordinator from a Swedish university. "Resource-Inclusive Renewable Materials: Leveraging Global Biomass for Sustainable Innovation" is coordinated by Torbjörn Petersson, who is a senior lecturer at the Department of Fibre Processes at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. The participants in his project come from academia and industry in nearly 30 countries.

The deadline for the 2025 COST call is 21 October. It is also possible to apply to take part in ongoing projects.
