Call year 2026 – news and dates
The dates are now set for more than 40 calls that the Swedish Research Council will open next year. Most of the calls are recurrent, others we have done on a few previous occasions, and some will be issued for the first time. More calls will be added later.
Not all details regarding the calls have been decided yet. Full instructions will be provided in the call texts to be published when each call in question opens. Furher calls will be added.
Dates for the Swedish Research Council’s calls in 2026
New in 2026
In some of our research field there are entirely new calls or calls that are new for that particular scientific field where the call has its main focus. Some new calls are interdisciplinary – although all our calls are open to relevant research projects regardless of the researcher's subject field. In addition, we have a number of new calls within the national research programmes.
Research environment grant – humanities and social sciences
The purpose of the grant is to create added value through collaboration in groups working with a long-term perspective. The research project must be more extensive and challenging than to be possible to undertake by a single researcher. The research group must consist of researchers from different subjects or higher education institutions, within or outside Sweden, who are working towards a common research goal.
A corresponding call was issued in 2024. Please note that it is not possible to apply for both this grant and a free project grant in the humanities and social sciences at the same time.
Doctoral programme grant within Humanities and Social sciences
The graduate schools aim to establish a new research area, strengthen expertise within a specific field or enhance national and international collaboration by contributing to activities linked to graduate school activities.
Project grants for research into racism
The grant aims to strengthen Swedish research on racism and is based on a government mandate. A call for a similar project grant was last issued in 2023.
Project grant for research into the Holocaust, victims of the Holocaust and anti-Semitism
The grant aims to strengthen Swedish research in this area. The call is based on a government commission. A call for a similar project grant was last issued in 2023. We have also previously issued a guest researcher grant in this area.
Project grant for research into violence in close relationships, honor-related violence, and human trafficking
On behalf of the government, we are conducting a research initiative on men's violence against women, violence in close relationships, honour-related violence and oppression, as well as prostitution and human trafficking for sexual purposes and sexual exploitation of children. Next year, we will announce a project grant for research covering these areas. The initiative will run until 2032.
Network grant for collaboration with the USA in cancer research
The purpose of this network grant is to give researchers the opportunity to create or develop a network for cancer research over a period of one year. A maximum of six other researchers may be invited to participate in the application, and at least one of them must be based in the USA. A similar grant was issued in 2025.
Project grants for research within primary care
The idea behind the grant is to give people working in primary care the opportunity to conduct research and establish themselves as independent researchers while developing their professional skills. The funds are to be used for long-term research on diseases and medical conditions that are diagnosed, treated and referred within primary care. A similar call for applications was issued in 2023.
Grant for competence competence programme in clinical therapy research
The purpose of the initiative is to strengthen the competence of researchers who wish to conduct randomised clinical trials. The goal is to disseminate and increase knowledge about how to conduct such studies in Sweden in terms of, for example, regulations and permit applications, public involvement, statistical analysis, patient recruitment and project management. Higher education institutions and regions can apply for the competence programme, but not individual researchers.
Project grant for research into democracy, societal resilience and reform processes
The grant aims to strengthen Swedish research in this area. The call is based on a government mandate. A call for a similar project grant was last issued in 2025.
Strategic Recruitment of Associate Senior Lecturers
The grant enables higher education institutions (HEI) to apply for funding to recruit researchers who are at an early stage of their careers for employment as a senior lecturer. Higher education institutions applying for career support must also be prepared to co-fund the employment. The call is based on a government mandate.
Grants for centre of excellence
The purpose of the grant is to support the build-up and development of environments that promote research collaboration on a joint theme and contribute to higher education. The call is open for applications relating to pioneering and multi-disciplinary issues in all scientific disciplines. The initiative is based on a Government mandate. We also issued this grant in 2022.
More information about the grant is available in the advance information on the call page.
Grant for recruiting international visiting researchers to Sweden 2026
Next year, higher education institutions will again be able to recruit researchers working outside Europe via the Swedish Research Council. This year's call for applications for grants to recruit international visiting researchers to Sweden closes on 1 December, but a new round will open on 11 February 2026. (Please note that the information about this grant was updated on 25 November.)
The Swedish Research Council is responsible for six national research programmes. Every year, we issue different types of calls within the programmes. Next year, we are issuing calls within four of them.
Doctoral programme grant within crime research
Research within the national research programme on crime will contribute to creating a knowledge-based and effective practice for preventing and combating crime. In 2026, we will announce funding for graduate schools to strengthen the long-term need for competence within crime research.

Project grants for research into migration and integration
The national research programme on migration and integration was established in 2017, and since then we have announced grants for graduate schools and research environments, among other things. Next year, we will announce project grants. The last time we issued project grants in this area was in 2023.

Proof of concept within the field of infection
The purpose of the grant is to bridge the gap between basic research and the utilisation or commercialisation of research results in the field of infection. The call is made within the framework of the national research programmes on antibiotic resistance and viruses and pandemics, respectively, and applies to medicine and health as well as natural sciences and engineering. A corresponding grant was last issued in 2024.

Grants for centre formation and collaboration within antibiotic resistance
The call is intended to support interdisciplinary centre formation and collaboration between researchers and actors in regional or national organisations and industry. The grant is intended to promote the utilisation of research data, expertise, education and infrastructure. It may be used for communication and coordination, or to foster collaboration between sectors and research disciplines, but may not be used to finance research. The call for proposals is made within the framework of the national research programme on antibiotic resistance.

Project grants for research into antimicrobial resistance
The call for proposals is intended to fund applications in the areas of epidemiology and interventions, clinical needs and urgent studies, and crisis preparedness perspectives on AMR. The research should focus on infections caused by bacteria, fungi or parasites. The application must show how the research question addresses a societal need and contributes to knowledge that can be of practical use. In addition, there must be a plan for how the project's results can be translated into action. The call for proposals is made within the framework of the national research programme on antibiotic resistance.

More calls will be published
Further calls will be added. These may, for example, be calls we make on behalf of the government or calls we issue in collaboration with other countries.
