Joakim Malmström appointed new Executive director of the Swedish Research Council

The Swedish Research Council has recruited Joakim Malmström as its new Executive director. He joins us from the National Agency for Education, where he is Director general.

“I am very pleased to welcome Joakim Malmström to the Swedish Research Council as the new Executive director. We have been looking for an Executive director who combines knowledge and clarity with good leadership and care for the working environment. In recruitment of Joakim, we have found a committed and well-qualified leader who will be able to work with both long-term stability and the further development that the public agency needs. I look forward to working with him,” says Katarina Bjelke, Director general of the Swedish Research Council.

Joakim Malmström holds a PhD in history. He has extensive experience in the university and higher education sector, both as Head of Administration for the Faculty of Social Sciences at Stockholm University and as University Director for several years. He has also been Head of the Swedish Museum of Natural History and the Swedish National Heritage Board. Joakim Malmström comes most recently from the National Agency for Education, where he is Director general.

“The Swedish Research Council has an important and meaningful assignment, and I look forward to contributing to the agency’s continued development in a rapidly changeable and knowledge-intensive environment. With my broad experience from agency management and the university world, I hope to be able to strengthen the organisation’s activities. At the same time, I appreciate the opportunity to get closer to the operational work,” says Joakim Malmström.

Joakim Malmström will take up his position as Executive director on 20 May 2026, taking over the role from Maria Thuveson.
