National research programme in the societal consequences of digitalisation

The Swedish Research Council is responsible for a ten-year national research programme in the societal consequences of digitalisation. The programme shall contribute new knowledge about how digitalisation impacts on and is impacted by social and cultural relationships, working life, education, organisations, markets, and the democratic system, including public administration.

Goals of the research programme

Digitalisation offers many opportunities for development and increased efficiency, but also raises issues about aspects such as ethics, security, democracy and integrity. The purpose of the research programme is to strengthen research in the societal consequences of digitalisation from a variety of perspectives, such as competition, consumer protection and competence, participation, security and gender equality.

The research programme shall be run based on a strategic and coordinated research agenda that will be followed up, evaluated, and updated continuously. The research agenda is expected to be completed in February 2023.

Participating actors

The programme committee includes representatives from Formas, Forte, Riksbankens Jubileumsfond and Vinnova. They give advice on how the programme and the research agenda shall be designed, take part in joint calls where their interests coincide, and provide updates about ongoing and planned initiatives in the area.

The programme also has a knowledge committee with representatives from government agencies and organisations. The committee acts as a link between the research community and stakeholders, and helps to disseminate research research results and to collect knowledge needs.

A reference group with researchers in humanities, social sciences, information science and law also contribute to the work on the research programme.
