Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) is a programme within Horizon Europe aimed at increasing researcher mobility between countries, and between academia and business. The programme entails competence development for individual researchers and the same time as enabling higher education institutions to receive prominent researchers.
The budget for MSCA for the period 20212027 is 6.6 billion EUR.
Who is the programme intended for?
The programme is intended for doctoral students, postdocs, and established researchers in all scientific fields. Those who can apply for the funding are higher education institutions and research institutes, but also companies, the public sector, and research infrastructures.
Grant for postdocs
European postdoctoral fellowship (MSCA-PF)
This is aimed at researchers who have a doctoral degree, and a maximum of eight years’ research experience after the degree award. This focus covers a move to an EU member state or one of the countries associated to Horizon Europe during 1–2 years to carry out a research project.
Global postdoctoral fellowship (MSCA-GF)
This is aimed at researchers who have a doctoral degree, and a maximum of eight years’ research experience after the degree award. The researchers must have spent a long period in Europe or an associated country, and have a residents’ permit there. The grant entails a move to a non-associated third country or an associated country during 1–2 years to carry out a research project. The concluding phase shall be spent in an EU member state or an associated country.
Grant that can be applied for by organisations
Doctoral networks
Organisations both within the academic and non-academic sectors can apply for funding for doctoral programmes, for example to train doctoral students in converting their knowledge and ideas into products and services.
There are three forms of support:
- Doctoral Networks – standard
- Doctoral Networks – industrial doctorates
- Doctoral Networks – joint doctorates
MSCA COFUND
This is a grant for graduate schools for either doctoral students or postdocs that organisations within both the academic and non-academic sectors can apply for. The programme can run for up to five years and shall be linked to national strategies and priorities, for example a national research programme.
Exchanges for research personnel
Organisations both within and outside academia can apply for funding for personnel to work in another country, in another research field, or another sector for up to 12 months. This applies both to researchers and to administrators and technicians who work with research and innovation.
Support for activities under “European Researchers’ Night”
The Swedish activities for the research festival “European Researchers’ Night” are coordinated by VA Science & Public. The festval takes place on the last Friday of September every year. The purpose is to create a dialogue between researchers and the general public – with special focus on children and young persons. Read more about European Researchers’ Night
Your higher education institution can provide support with the application process
If a Swedish higher education institution (HEI) is your host organisation, then they can help with the application for a grant from MSCA. Many Swedish HEIs have units for research support or corresponding, who offer professional and highly qualified advice.
What help can the Swedish Research Council provide?
The Swedish Research Council has a National Contact Point (NCP) that functions as a link between researchers in Sweden, administrative personnel at Swedish HEIs, and the EU.
You are welcome to contact our National Contact Point, Isabel Dellacasa Lindberg, if you have any questions about MSCA. For more specific questions about your application, please contact your HEI.
