An institute set up by the EU in 1976 to help preserve Europe's cultural and scientific heritage. This institute is considered to be an EU institute, but it is based on a special convention. The university institute provides research and postgraduate education in the fields of economics, history, law, sociology and political sciences.

The funding of EUI does not fall within the joint EU budget; instead the member countries pay specific member contributions that fund around two thirds of the activities. EUI currently has 23 members. Sweden has been a member since 1997 via the Swedish Research Council. Several other countries have associate agreements with EUI.
