UGU – Evaluation Through Follow-up

A social sciences longitudinal survey in the field of education, based on a database comprising ten nationally representative samples of students.

UGU (Evaluation Through Follow-up) is the only database of its kind in Sweden within the educational sciences area, and is also one of the oldest social sciences databases in Sweden. The unique feature of UGU is that several longitudinal studies have been combined into one whole. The longitudinal design means that the same individuals are followed from middle school (9–12 years) through the entire educational system. In this way, the effect of early prerequisites on later results and study choices can be studied.

To date, ten follow-up surveys have been started, based on large and nationally representative samples from different year-groups of pupils. The first data collection was made in 1961. For each sample, administrative data, measurement of study prerequisites, questionnaire data and study results are collected. These measurements are in many cases comparable between year groups.

The follow-up surveys are a stage in the national evaluation of Swedish schools. Following ethical review, UGU’s variables can also be linked to external variables. The database constitutes documentation for research, particularly within the field of social sciences.
