EU Framework Programmes

The European Union (EU) organises extensive collaboration in European research and development. The goals, programme structures, and budgets for this work are established through framework programmes. On January 1, 2014, the new framework programme Horizon 2020 was launched.

Horizon 2020

Horizon 2020 is the new, close to 80 billion euro framework programme for research and innovation, running between 2014 and 2020.

The Horizon 2020 programme has three main pillars:

  • Societal challenges (includes investments in health, energy, transport, climate action and freedom and security research projects),
  • Excellent science (includes grants to top-level individual researchers, and investments in future technologies and training for researchers), and
  • Industrial leadership (includes investments in biotechnology and space technologies, access to risk finance and support for innovative small firms)

Swedish involvement

The Swedish government has decided on the Swedish organisation for the framework programme and the experts and national contacts points who will represent Sweden in Horizon 2020. The experts assist the European Commission services with tasks in connection with the programme. The national contact points (NCP) is the main structure to provide guidance, practical information and assistance on all aspects of participation in Horizon 2020.
