A cookie is a text file that a website asks to store on the visitor’s computer. Cookies contain information that is needed for various functions on the website.
There are two types of cookies: temporary and permanent. Temporary cookies are deleted when you leave the website or close the browser. Permanent cookies have a termination date and are only deleted once that date has passed.
There is also a difference between cookies that are stored by the website owner and cookies stored by third parties. “Third party cookies” are created by external services, such as tools for collecting web statistics. They can be used to map your behaviour on several different websites. Most browsers offer the option of blocking this type of cookies.
The Swedish Research Council’s use of cookies
The Swedish Research Council uses cookies for various purposes. One purpose is to manage logins to our web services. Here, cookies are needed to log in and to use the services in a secure manner.
Another purpose is to collect web statistics and carry out anonymous web surveys. Data from these is used in the work on developing the functions and content of the websites. We also measure visitor flows between the website and some of our other digital services and websites. When collecting web statistics, we use Google Analytics and it creates third party cookies. On this website we also use Hotjar to better understand our users' needs and to optimize the website.
Finally, we use cookies in order for our websites to know that you have accepted our use of cookies by clicking on the button I understand in our cookie message.
