Grant for research communication in migration and integration

The following requirements must be fulfilled in order for you to be eligible to apply for the grant. We carry out checks and reject applications that do not fulfil the requirements.

Focus

Since 2017, the Swedish Research Council has been tasked by the Government to operate a ten-year national research programme in migration and integration. In addition to strengthening research in this field, the programme shall also contribute to research being disseminated and made accessible outside the research community.

The Swedish Research Council is now issuing a call for grants for communication by researchers about migration and integration within the framework for the national research programme. According to the Government mandate, the communication projects shall contribute to increased impact of the research results in society, in the form of development, knowledge accumulation and knowledge-based policies and administration, for example. The communication activities shall include target groups outside the research community. Innovative strategies for communication are particularly encouraged. The activities shall be of a scope that would not have been possible to realise without extra resources, and shall differ from the communication usually included in projects funded by the Swedish Research Council.

The call is open to researchers in all scientific disciplines studying issues related to migration, migrants and integration.

Applicant

The applicant shall be an individual researcher together with their organisation (Swedish higher education institution (HEI), or some other Swedish organisation that fulfils our criteria for administrating organisations for Swedish Research Council grants Opens in new window.). We must have approved your organisation as an administrating organisation for you to apply. The administrating organisation must sign your application in Prisma no later than 7 calendar days after the deadline for this call.

You shall be the project leader and be responsible for the project. The time you set aside for the project (your activity level, that is the percentage of a full-time equivalent) must be suited to the task and its implementation throughout the grant period.

At the time of applying, you must be or have been the recipient of a previous grant that ended (or will end) on 31 December 2020 or later (see below for the relevant grant forms). Your application for the communication grant shall be linked to the previously awarded or ongoing grant/project.

You must hold a Swedish doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, awarded no later than the deadline for this call. For applicants with Swedish doctoral degrees, the award date listed in Ladok applies. If you are applying within artistic research, there is no formal requirement for a doctoral degree, but you must have a high level of research competency within an artistic area.

You do not need to be employed by the administrating organisation at the time of application, but you must be employed at the start of and throughout the grant period and any further additional availability period. The employment must equal at least 20 per cent of a full-time equivalent.

Number of applications and previous grants

The requirements described in this section only apply to applicants (project leaders).

General information about overlaps between applications and grants

Your application must not cover costs for purposes that are already funded by the Swedish Research Council or any other funding body. Overlaps with other grants or applications may impact on the grant amount you are awarded, or be a reason for us to reject your application.

What grants may I apply for simultaneously from the Swedish Research Council?

You may only submit one application for this grant under this call.

What applies for my previous grant from the Swedish Research Council?

To apply under this call, you must be or have been the holder of a grant from the Swedish Research Council, with a grant period that ended (or will end) on 31 December 2020 or later. Your previously awarded grant must be a project grant (including a project grant for international collaboration), one of our career support funding forms (international postdoc, starting grant, consolidator grant, grant for half-time research position in a clinical environment, research time), a distinguished professor grant, or a research environment grant. You may also apply for the grant if you are active in an organisation that has an ongoing grant to research or research-supporting activity from the Swedish Research Council, for example a grant for a graduate school, a research infrastructure grant, or an operational grant. You must then be active within the framework of the ongoing grant.

The grant may relate to any of the Swedish Research Council’s areas, but must have dealt with issues relating to migration or integration. The communication grant shall be linked to the previously awarded or ongoing grant/project.

Note: If you have been the project leader for previous grants from the Swedish Research Council that have ended, a final financial report for all of these must have been submitted within the permitted time frame in order for you to apply for a new grant. Please contact your administrating organisation if you are unsure whether all your final reports have been submitted.

What applies for applications to or grants from other funding bodies?

If your application to the Swedish Research Council relates to the same project idea as a grant you have already been awarded by, or are applying for to another funding body, please describe this.

Participating researchers

You may include up to 6 participating researchers in your application. Participating researchers are other researchers with a doctoral degree or equivalent competence (not doctoral students) who are active within the research the communication project relates to. They do not have to be employed by a Swedish HEI.

Participating researchers shall provide the necessary information themselves in Prisma, and upload these to the application. Any further collaborating partners and their roles shall be described in the research plan (please see instructions under “Project plan” below).

Collaboration

The project shall include some form of collaboration with other personnel, such as a curator, producer, creator, collaboration coordinator, collaboration lecturer, artist, project coordinator, designer, communicator or other relevant professional expertise. You must describe the format for the collaboration, and the person’s role in the project in the project plan.

Costs and grant amounts

You can apply for a grant for costs directly related to the implementation of the communication project, such as salaries, retained expertise, rental of external premises, or remuneration to participants in collaboration activities.

The grant must not be used for scientific conferences, activities that are necessary to fulfil ethical requirements (such as meetings with public agencies), internal training, or other inputs that fall within the framework for ordinary research or communication activities at administrating organisations or other HEIs.

The grant amount includes cover of indirect costs as a percentage of the direct costs, according to the model used by your administrating organisation. Grants must not be used for scholarships. If a doctoral student participates, project funds may not be paid out as salary for research, teaching or other departmental duties.

The amounts you may apply for are the following:

• Minimum 100 000 SEK, maximum 500 000 SEK for grants lasting 6–12 months.
• Minimum 200 000 SEK, maximum 1 000 000 SEK for grants lasting 13–24 months.

Grant period

You may apply for a grant to cover 6–24 months, starting from January 2023. The first payment will be made no earlier than December 2022.

Descriptive information

Abstract

In the abstract, please describe in brief the following:

• What is to be done: purpose and aims
• How the project will be implemented: project organisation, time plan and activities
• What is important about the planned project

The abstract shall provide a summary picture of the purpose and implementation of the project. Please use wording to ensure persons with another subject specialisation can understand the information.

The description may cover a maximum of 1 500 characters including blank spaces. This is approximately one third of an A4 page in Arial, font size 11, single line spacing.

Popular science description

Describe the planned project in such a way that a person who is not a researcher can understand it. Do this by answering the following questions:

• What is the project about?
• What is important about the planned project?

The popular science description is important when we inform about projects funded by the Swedish Research Council.

The text must be in Swedish and cover a maximum of 2 000 characters including blank spaces. This is approximately half an A4 page in Arial, font size 11, single line spacing.

Project description

Project plan

The project plan shall consist of a brief but complete description of the communication project. It shall cover a maximum of 6 page-numbered A4 pages in Arial, font size 11, single line spacing and 2.5 cm margins, including references and any images.

The project plan must include the following headings and information, listed in the following order:

• Purpose and aims: State the overall purpose and concrete goals of the communication project.
• Project organisation: Clarify how you and any participating researchers and other personnel will contribute to the implementation of the project. Explain in particular how the time allocated by you (that is, your activity level) as project leader is suitable for the task, including the relationship with your other undertakings. Describe and explain the competences and roles of the participating researchers and other personnel, during what phase they are participating in the project, and also any other key persons who are important for the implementation of the project.
• Significance: Describe briefly how the project relates to your previously awarded research project, and the impact the communication project may have in the short and long term. Formulate the project’s potential concrete added value for individuals in the target group, and for the project team itself. State how the project is planned so that these added values can be achieved.
• Communication plan: Describe the communication activity/-ies under the following headings:
  • Target group: State what characterises the group the project is intending to reach, and how the target group can benefit from the project’s knowledge and activity/-ies. State how the project reasons in terms of representation, and how you plan to take into account views arising during the project process.
  • Activity/-ies: Describe the design and what will be implemented in the project, and how the activity/-ies will reach or involve the target group intended. State where the activity/-ies will take place, in what format, and how active the target group is intended to be.
  • Time plan: Describe summarily the time plan for the project during the grant period. Describe also any crucial risks or obstacles that may impact on the implementation, and your plan for managing these.
  • Follow-up: Describe how the project and the activity/-ies will be followed up. Describe the planned follow-up method, and describe how the method is intended to show how the goal and purpose have been achieved, and added value created for the target group.

Provide the following information also. If a heading is not relevant to your application, please state this under the heading.

• Equipment: Describe the basic equipment you and your team have at your disposal for the project.

Description of previously awarded grant from the Swedish Research Council

Please describe your previously awarded project/grant that the communication grant is linked to. State the project title, type of grant, Swedish Research Council case number and amount, grant period and availability period for your previously awarded project/grant. You can find information about the criteria for your previous grant in the “Approval of terms and conditions” you received from the Swedish Research Council.

The description may cover a maximum of 2 000 characters, including blank spaces. This is approximately half an A4 page in Arial, font size 11.

Budget and research resources

Project personnel

State the activity level (per cent of a full-time equivalent) of all personnel active within the project, that is to say yourself, any other researchers and other personnel. Please also state the salary you are applying for, for yourself and/or other personnel active within the project, both as a percentage of a full-time salary and as actual annual amounts (including social security contributions). Please state the amounts in Swedish krona, rounded to the nearest 1 000 SEK.

Other costs

Describe any other costs (premises costs and running costs) of the project. Please state the amounts in Swedish krona, rounded to the nearest 1 000 SEK.

Total cost of the project

Prisma will automatically add up your budget items in a table. The total amount you are applying for shall also include indirect costs. You will have to add these to the table yourself. Here you can also add any additional costs that the project entails (for which you are not seeking funding under this call).

Indirect costs follow the model that your administrating organisation uses. Please contact your administrating organisation if you have any questions abut what constitutes indirect and direct costs.

Justification of the budget applied for

Justify briefly each cost applied for in your budget. The description may cover a maximum of 4 000 characters including blank spaces. This is approximately one A4 page in Arial, font size 11, single line spacing.

Other funding

Please state your or any other researcher’s funding for the project over and above what is applied for in this application. Please state the amounts in Swedish krona, rounded to the nearest 1 000 SEK.

Publications

Attach your and any participating researchers’ publication lists to the respective fields (the participating researchers’ publication lists must be joined up into one file). The list for each researcher shall include the 10 publications that are the most relevant to the project described, and shall cover a maximum of 1 A4 page in Arial, font size 11, single line spacing and 2.5 cm margins.

Please only include articles or equivalent that are published or accepted for publication at the time of applying. The author name order shall be identical to that of the published work. The application cannot be supplemented with publications after the deadline for the call.

The publications shall be of the types: Peer-reviewed original articles, conference contributions, edited volumes, research review articles, books and book chapters, and other publications including popular science books/presentations and/or artistic outputs.

Administrating organisation

Please state the administrating organisation and project site.

Participants

Here you as applicant may invite any other participating researchers and administrators to your application.

CV

Under this tab, please upload your relevant CV information from your personal account in Prisma. Any participating researchers must upload their own CV information to the application.

The following information (where available) must always be included in each CV:

• Education: Third cycle higher education.
• Work: Current employment (including information on employment format) and any longer relevant employment you have had.
• Merits and awards: Other merits of relevance for the application, including previous experience of science communication (may be stated under “Other merits”).

Your application is evaluated in competition with the other applications on the basis of the following evaluation criteria.

Evaluation process

Your application for Grant for research communication in migration and integration is evaluated by a specialised review panel where the members are Swedish communication experts and researchers within migration and integration.

At least three members review and grade your application individually. The entire review panel then meets at a review panel meeting to discuss and prioritise the applications, and finally to make a proposal for a decision to the Scientific Council for Humanities and Social Sciences.

Following the grant decision your application will receive an individual final statement containing the grades and a summary of the review panel’s discussion and overall assessment of the scientific quality of the application.

Evaluation criteria and guiding questions

The evaluation of the scientific quality of your application is made based on two criteria (Communication quality of the proposed project, and Relevance for the call). The purpose of using several components is to achieve a multi-faceted evaluation. The criteria are assessed on a three-grade grade scale.

For each criterion, there are guiding questions to support the panel members’ evaluation of your application. These can also function as guidance for you when you write your application.

Communication quality of the proposed project (1–3)

Guiding questions:

• To what extent are the purpose and goal of the project suitable, clear and well-justified?
• To what extent does the application specify to what defined target group the project is aimed/will collaborate with? To what extent is the target group relevant in relation to the project’s purpose, goal and budget?
• To what extent are activities and timings shown? To what extent are the planned features adequate for achieving the goal?
• To what extent is the degree of interaction (information, dialogue and/or co-creation) that the project is intended to create shown, and how? To what extent is the method clearly described? To what extent is the design realistic and suitable in relation to the target group, goal, budget and time plan? Is the collaboration with the competence engaged suitably organised?
• To what extent is the way the project management will be carried out shown? How well integrated are the project goals and methods set?
• To what extent does the project involve innovative strategy, methods or ways of working?
• To what extent does the application discuss issues of representation (social inclusion) when relevant? Does the application state whether and how the project tries to bridge any knowledge barriers or heterogeneity in the target group? Will the project be adapted according to what is characteristic for the target group (previous knowledge, groups size, age, gender, social group, language, ethnicity, geography, etc.)? How will the project support the participation by the target groups in the project?
• Is any follow-up planned? Is the model for follow-up reasonable in relation to the purpose, goal and budget? To what extent will it be able to answer whether the goal for the project has been achieved, and whether the project has created added value for the target group?

Relevance to the call (1–3)

• Does the application relate to communication projects in migration and integration? (Requirement)

Does the application state how the project relates to the research that the applicant is conducting/has conducted, and how the project might develop together with the research? Is the justification of the project relevant in relation to the previous research referred to?
• To what extent does the project have a potential value for the target group outside academia, for ongoing research and/or continued collaboration in the project’s network? What is the target group expected to do with the new knowledge, and how well is the project prepared to achieve this?
