New call – research environment grant in 6G

In August, the Swedish Research Council will be opening a call for grants to research environments in 6G. The call is part of the Government’s initiative to develop the next generation of wireless systems. The grant shall be used to build up strong research environments in Sweden, and increase the opportunities for international exchanges within the area.

The grant is part of the Government’s initiative to strengthen basic research, applied research, and innovation in the sixth generation of wireless communication systems (6G), which the Swedish Research Council and Vinnova have been mandated to implement.
The purpose of the grant is to support the build-up of strong research environments, where teams of researchers work towards a joint research goal, both nationally and in bilateral collaborations. Strong national research environments in the area result in synergy effects and create added value between the researchers involved. This contributes to strengthening Sweden’s position as a leading research nation in 6G.

“The Government’s initiative is strengthening the national coordination in the 6G area. Building up strong research environments is crucial if Swedish research is to continue to be at the leading edge in this area, which will change the communication landscape,” says Mattias Marklund, Secretary General for Natural and Engineering Sciences at the Swedish Research Council.

The purpose of the initiative is to strengthen the position of Swedish research and innovation in wireless communication systems, to increase Swedish companies’ competitiveness in the area, and to improve Swedish research environment’s preconditions for taking part in international research collaborations and get access to international research infrastructure.

The initiative covers 390 million SEK in total, of which the Swedish Research Council has been allocated 140 million SEK. A final report on the mandate shall be presented no later than March 2027.

The call in brief

  • The call will be open 21 August–17 September 2024.
  • The grant period is four years, and the grant amount will be 4–7 million SEK per year.
  • A decision on the applications to be awarded grants will be made in November 2024.
