Quality and impact of research in basic medicine in Sweden
The Swedish Research Council has conducted a national evaluation of the research field basic medicine using its evaluation model. The aim was to assess both the scientific quality and the research's impact on society. An international expert panel assessed the scientific quality based on a selection of top publications along with bibliometric statistics, while societal impact was evaluated through case studies.
The evaluation shows that some research demonstrates very high quality and often leads to groundbreaking discoveries. Sweden's citation impact is in line with the global average, though there are variations across research subjects and universities. There are several prominent examples of research that has had a significant and positive impact on society. To strengthen the research field, the panel has formulated a series of recommendations, both general and specifically aimed at universities.
