Agenda sets the direction for the national research programme in criminality
The Swedish Research Council is responsible for a ten-year national research programme in criminality. There is now a strategic research agenda in place, to guide the work forwards.
The aim of the national research programme in criminality is to add new knowledge about the causes and consequences of criminality, and also about methods for preventing and fighting crime.
There is now a strategic research agenda in place, to guide the work forwards. It has been developed by the Swedish Research Council in consultation with the actors involved.
The agenda points out three principal activities for the programme:
- Create meeting places for researchers and practitioners about knowledge needs in criminality.
- Initiate research and support the long-term development of the research field.
- Promote accessibility and dissemination of the research for a knowledge-based practice.
The agenda also includes a research review in criminology, a description of the research funding bodies and actors active in the field, and a mapping of projects of relevance to criminality that were funded during the period 2015–2022.

A call opens on 1 February
On 1 February, the Swedish Research Council is opening a new call under the programme: research environment grant on crime. The purpose of the grant is to create added value through collaboration in larger groupings, and to adopt a long-term perspective. The applicant shall be a constellation of several researchers from different higher education institutions (HEI) and/or different subjects, nationally or internationally. The first call under the programme – for project grants – was issued last year.
The Swedish Research Council is responsible for six national research programmes
The Swedish Research Council, Formas and Forte have been mandated by the Government to lead a number of national research programmes focusing on various societal challenges. The first programmes started in 2017. By 2022, the mandate had been expanded to 13 programmes in total, all with different focuses. The Swedish Research Council is responsible for six of these.
All programmes are broad, ten-year initiatives, aimed at coordinating research within a particular field. Each programme gathers together research funding bodies, research-producing bodies and societal actors, who will work together to improve our ability to manage the societal challenges indicated by the Government.
