Education is a corner stone in modern societies and is crucial for competitiveness, growth and sustainability. Enormous efforts of teaching and learning together with substantial public and private expenditures are invested every year in early childhood education and care, schools, higher education, vocational training and lifelong learning.

In Europe, the importance of education and training is increasingly acknowledged by public and private stakeholders. However, R&I-funding focused on education and training has been rather limited on the EU-level. A more ambitious and structured approach for Education R&I in the next EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP9) can be motivated.
